School community celebrates with “Put Your Hands Up for GPA” event

More than 100 parents, staff, partners, and supporters gathered at Harvard Business School on October 6 for the first “Put Your Hands Up for GPA” event, a benefit for Gardner Pilot Academy in Allston. The event included presentation of the inaugural Gardner Champion Award to Dr. Jean F. Mooney, Associate Professor Emeritus at the Lynch School of Education, Boston College, for her years of service to the school.

Dr. Mooney, a resident of Chestnut Hill, formerly coordinated the Masters program in Moderate Special Needs in the Department of Teacher Education.  In the 1990s, she was part of a university-wide initiative to create an urban full-service school model through the introduction of a clinical perspective to the student support process.  The effort involved developing new relationships among faculty and students in all of the professional schools at Boston College and firm connections to schools and health and human service agencies in the community.  As a result, the Gardner Elementary School transformed itself into Boston’s first award-winning full-service school.

GPA principal Erica Herman and former principal Catalina Montes presented the award to Dr. Mooney.

“Jean Mooney has been a tremendous advocate, volunteer, and friend of Gardner Pilot Academy,” said Ms. Herman. “She embodies the partnerships that enable GPA to thrive as a full-service school. We are incredibly grateful for her years of tireless support.”

The event, hosted by Harvard Business School, featured a silent art auction to benefit the school’s innovative Friday arts enrichment program. The school enlists local artists to provide visual and performing arts instruction to students every Friday.
