Allston-Brighton families have a new
K-8 school option: Gardner Pilot Academy

Registration begins in January for
open seats in kindergarten and Grade 6

ALLSTON, MA — The award-winning Gardner Pilot Academy (GPA) will expand to a K-8 school beginning in September, with the addition of two Grade 6 classrooms. The school will add Grades 7 and 8 in subsequent years, becoming a full K-8 school in the 2014-2015 school year.  Current GPA students are guaranteed middle school seats, and a limited number of additional seats are available to other families living in Allston-Brighton and other neighborhoods in the North Zone.

Last month, the Boston School Committee approved a recommendation from Superintendent Carol R. Johnson to expand GPA as part of a comprehensive facilities plan to increase access to high-performing, highly chosen schools throughout the district.

“Boston families value the educational continuity that K-8 schools offer,” said Dr. Johnson. “The School Committee and I are delighted to expand the tremendous full-service programs offered at Gardner Pilot Academy through Grade 8.”

GPA principal Erica Herman said, “This expansion marks another exciting milestone in the great history of our school. Families and staff have worked long and hard to make the dream of K-8 a reality, and we are excited to offer our students an outstanding, well-rounded education through the middle school years.”

Located at 30 Athol Street in Allston, Gardner Pilot Academy is a full-service community school that serves nearly 350 students. The school provides education and support to students from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. every day, with regular school hours between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. To achieve the school’s mission of academic excellence for all students, GPA provides high-quality teaching, along with a range of social, emotional and enrichment programs. GPA maintains strong relationships with dozens of community partners – including universities, physical and mental health providers, and non-profit enrichment, recreation, and arts organizations – that actively strengthen GPA’s ability to teach and enhance student learning. GPA will hold a school tour for prospective families on Thursday, January 12, at 9:00 a.m., but families can call the school to arrange tours at other times. Contact Elba Mendez at 617-635-8365 for more information.

Registration begins in January for open seats in K1 (pre-kindergarten) for four-year-olds, K2 (kindergarten) for five-year-olds, and the school’s new Grade 6.
