Gardner Pilot Academy is becoming a K-8 school!

GPA has been approved to expand from an elementary school to a K-8 program, beginning with the addition of Grade 6 in September 2012 and Grades 7-8 in subsequent years. School staff are working closely with district officials to assess space capacity, as well as budget and staffing needs, to offer continuity of programs from pre-kindergarten through grade 8. Boston Partners in Education has recognized two longstanding Gardner Pilot Academy business partners for their volunteer efforts at the school. Mark R. DiOrio and Kerin O. Petitti from The Bulfinch Companies, Inc., are the recipients of the 2011 Joyna Bozzotto Award. DiOrio and Petitti are General Counsel and Legal Assistant, respectively, at the Needham-based real estate investment and development firm. GPA teacher runs the Boston Marathon for cancer research

Alyssa Sinel, a kindergarten teacher at GPA, ran the Boston Marathon this year with the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge to raise funds for cancer research. Running in honor of a colleague fighting the disease, Alyssa has raised more than $5,000, and is still accepting donations for this worthy cause. “This has been an amazing experience,” she said. “I’ve been inspired by everyone I work with at GPA throughout this process.”

Harvard volunteers help students get GPA ready for spring

Employees of Harvard University and neighboring businesses volunteered their time this spring to spruce up the grounds at Gardner Pilot Academy and other Allston landmarks during the annual Boston Shines neighborhood cleanup.  More than 80 adults joined GPA students to rake leaves, paint benches and lamp posts, mulch flowerbeds, and sweep the school’s outdoor classroom and playground.
